Petroleum – An Introduction
The world’s first historic oil well was drilled by Col. Edwin Drake in August 1859, in the USA. In March 1867, India appeared on the petroleum map of the world, when oil was struck in Assam. Petroleum is either recovered by drilling or through pressure imposed in the reservoir by natural gas, ground water or by gravity. Today many petroleum products like kerosene, petrol, diesel, lubricants, wax, petrolatum, asphalt, petroleum coke and many others are being commonly used. The sharp increase in the production of petroleum and natural gas as a result of industrialisation, has forced us to seriously look into the reserves of petroleum and natural gas and how long this valuable resource will last to satisfy the needs of humanity.
This book is an introduction to the world of petroleum, its history and formation, the methods of drilling, various petroleum products, its benefits to humankind, its impact on environment, and the search for alternate fuels.
