Maqbool
‘Maqbool’ is not a cliched conventional biography; it is a unique tale of a matchless great artist’s childhood and early youth told by one of his discerning disciples. It has the mellifluous flow and limpidity of poetry, the flight of a boundless bird, a mellow tone. Akhilesh has freed it from the burden of excessive dates and facts and given it a lightness that impresses us with the mischievous innocence of the young Maqbool and also gives us the flavour of the future Husain’s magic and masterly craftsmanship. The adjective ‘magical’ occurs frequently in this work about the effects created by Husain’s later works; this adjective is apt for this work itself that has been created by an artist immersed in the Master’s art.
